Macau Sound Gallery: Soundscapes of Macau An Immersive Interactive Installation

What was the first sound heard? It was the caress of the waters” (The Soundscape, R. Murray Schafer, p.15) Sound is everywhere, the sound of water, wind, car engine, even breathing can make sounds, sound is very relevant to nurture life. As mentioned in R. Murray Schafer's book, the first sound in the world is water, everything stems from nature and it is inseparable to us. Those sounds some are beautiful, and some are noisy, which are changeable and complexity, that is why the study of sound environment attracts me.
This study focuses on the sound environment of Macau. As an international tourist city, Macau has a large number of tourists visit every day. According to the statistics from the Government Tourism Administration, inbound tourists have reached 39 million in 2019. Compared to 2018, it has increased by 12.7%, and there is an upward trend every year. The growing passenger volume and the tourism industry have changed the sounds of Macau, and this is what we have ignored. So the goal of "Macau Sound Gallery" is to let people know more about how does Macau is suffered by tourism, and also to understand what is causing the existing sounds(noise) in Macau. “Macau Sound Gallery” is an art installation. It is mainly divided into two parts, one is a sensor device (made by 3D model), and the second part is the chosen scenes video.
Sound will be recorded and then connected to the sensor device. People can see the corresponding Macau scenes video on the screen and the sound frequency after they interact with the sensor device.
Introduction of the study, related literature review would be included. Which consists about the origin of sound, the relationship between sound, music and noise, and have an in-depth discussion of noise. Some other sound artworks would be mentioned and used as a reference for this work.
Also, questionnaire survey, which presented here would be mentioned about people’s points of view on Macau. Such as the place where they think is the most influenced by noise. Finally finished the survey can get the noisiest and quietest places in Macau, as well as the most crowded period. These data would be chosen for analyzing and recording.
In addition to large numbers of visitors in Macau, there has another factors caused the sound to change. Those are the interesting discover during the study. In Future, I hope that people through interact with“Macau Sound Gallery”, can let them understand more about the current situation of Macau, moreover, it can be the reference for Macau government's remediation plan. I believe that everyone will be attracted by “Macau Sound Gallery”
