Abstract
This dissertation investigates the challenge posed by modernist orthogonal space in contemporary architecture, particularly within the high-density urban context of Macao where the distribution of cultural resources is a significant issue. The primary objective is to design and propose a multi-functional building — the Marina Cultural Center — that utilizes an irregular structure to break through the limitations of traditional form and space. This approach aims to enhance architectural function, alleviate the scarcity of cultural facilities, and create a new urban landmark.

The research methodology integrates a literature review, typological case studies, and a research-by-design approach. The theoretical framework is built upon two key concepts: ""spatial flexibility"" and ""irregular and non-standard structures"". This is complemented by a typological analysis of buildings with interspersed structures and the functions of libraries and cafes to inform the design process. The study culminates in a specific architectural proposal for a site located in Zone D, a newly reclaimed area in Macao.

The final design proposes an ""Interspersed Steel Reinforced Concrete Frame Structure"". The architectural solution is characterized by three core principles: (1) an asymmetric array of structural components that allows for open and adaptable interior spaces; (2) a scattered and flexible distribution of functional programs; and (3) a permeable, panoramic glass curtain wall that integrates the building with its coastal landscape.

The project demonstrates how non-orthogonal architectural design transcends conventional spatial limitations, enhances spatial efficiency, and effectively addresses the demand for cultural resource allocation within high-density urban contexts.
