Abstract
Macau's rapid development over the years and the growing pressure on urban infrastructures has made it imperative to rethink transportation systems, and managing mobility has become paramount for the efficient running and ease of navigation within the city. The shifting demand towards more sustainable and efficient transport modes, along with technological advancements, and everyday use of Smartphone's, has allowed for the shared mobility market to gain scale across most cities and become more viable.
This study aims to determine how the use of Smart Shared Mobility Systems in Macau could empower commuter choices and improve their travel experience. A mixed-method approach was used to garner a more thorough understanding, combining both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. A survey of the target audience gave insights into mobility preferences, commuting habits, and assessed their views on mobility alternatives. The study of existing infrastructures, in turn, sought to identify enabling opportunities and understand the hindrances on personal mobility.
Personal mobility has dramatically benefited from mobile application services where real-time information is provided, simplifying user choices, and making trip planning more convenient. Nevertheless, for new mobility behaviours to take shape, the service must meet the criteria that suit the user's basic needs. As such, and in order to succeed, an App design must be intuitive, evident to use, and the result of a user-centred design process that anticipates user's needs, shaping an improved user experience that empowers commuters with control over their mobility.
Future work would comprise a desktop version using responsive design, additional mobility options, design development and branding of urban equipment inherent to the service. Further studies concerning the existing infrastructures and urban planning solutions would also be recommended.
