Abstract
This research investigates the processing of mathematics and different types of language ( an alphabetic language and a pictographic language) in the brain, and therefore how the learning of different languages affects the learning of mathematics. Literature reveals cultural differences in teaching, learning and child rearing. In addition to these differences, the language centres for an alphabetic language differ from those for a pictographic language due to the nature of the languages. Therefore the brain cell configurations differ for those speaking different types of languages. This then affects the mathematics centres and the learning of mathematics. Further research is needed to investigate the strategies for the development of the cerebral cortices for the learning of mathematics, and re-evaluation of the international mathematics assessment tools are essential to render international assessment culturally fair and brain fair.
