Abstract
The main theme of our Research is to understand the impacts of the dependency on the smartphone has on our health and also to develop a product, our practical project which provides a means to monitor our health against the use of the smartphone, mitigate some of the health issues related to the smartphones and also provide a better solution to digital screen viewing in dark spaces through the design of a new interactive lamp, the Health Lamp.
There are many studies into the health impacts through the use of smartphones which includes potential damage to the eyes from exposure to blue light from smartphones as well as temporary blindness through using smartphones in the dark, causing Transient Smartphone Blindness and other consequences of excessive use of smartphones.
The research into the health impacts of using smartphones, suggests excessive and prolonged use of smartphones before sleeping the impacts on the sleep quality through restricting melatonin production affecting the Circadian Rhythm of the human body. Under certain circumstances, the use of smartphones in the dark may also cause temporary Transient Smartphone Blindness, due to differential bleaching of photo pigment within the eyes. Although our survey and research suggest that there is no conclusive evidence that the use of smartphones in the dark would cause of permanent damage to the eyes.
However there are studies which suggests that there is a connection between excessive screen time, degrading academic performance, reduction in physical activities and insufficient sleep time. Studies suggest that screen time should be limited to 2 hours within a 24-hour period.
