Publication A Comparative Study of Sympathy in David Hume, Karuna in Buddhism, and Ren in Confucianism(University of Saint Joseph, 2021) ;Chon, Iao PangAlabanza, Ian Shelley Sasha PugalEmpathy is a capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference. It means stepping into somebody’s shoes. The meaning of sympathy in David Hume is equal to empathy in academic study. In Eastern philosophy there are two terms, which are highly similar to empathy in the Western perspective: karuna in Buddhism and ren in Confucianism. Karuna is a core emotional state in Bodhisattva to express empathy. Ren is a core concept in Confucianism. It starts with Ce yin zi xin, which is similar to empathy. The goal of his thesis is to share the common ground of these terms and find out their differences according to historical context, cognition, emotion, and action dimensions. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Migrant transnationalism and religious transformation: religious faith and practice among Filipino migrants (An Anthroplogical Approach Focusing on Macau)(University of Saint Joseph, 2016) ;Alabanza, Ian Shelley Sasha PugalAgcaoili, Suzette MunozReligion and migration are both phenomena that have endured perennially in the experience of humanity. However, studies on the relationship of these two subjects are not as prevalent compared to how widespread international migration has become especially among people coming from religious societies. This work contributes to the knowledge base on the significance of religion within the context of international migration by looking at how religious faith and practice evolve as a result of the experience of migration. Interviews about the migration narratives of Filipino Catholics working in Macau were conducted. These were supported by data collected through the use of survey questionnaires that look into changes in religious practices of respondents as well as their attitudes towards faith and belief. The study has found that there is constancy in the religious faith and practice of Filipino Catholics even amidst external changes to the physical and social environment brought about by moving to a predominantly secular society. Through recourse to anthropological analysis, this immutability of faith is attributable to the unique ethnographic feature of Filipinos' high regard for the centrality and importance of interiority in their life. Publication Palate Consciousness: A Philosophical Analysis on the Cultivation of Gustatory Aesthetics Through the Framework of Phenomenology of Perception(University of Saint Joseph, 2022) ;Chiang, I. ManAlabanza, Ian Shelley Sasha PugalGustatory Taste Aesthetics, the realm of experience, the realm of beauty, is where palate sensory enjoyment and indulgence emerge. Taste aesthetics is about the experience that arises through our sense of taste, where a person experiences delicious food that gives them satisfaction and joy. Is sensory enjoyment a purely subjective matter when “tastiness” varies from person to person? Through the framework of Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception, the process of how consciousness alters the experience of tasting is examined. When an individual has the ability to enhance their gustatory satisfaction, it will be beneficial for their lives and for having a wellbeing of living standards. The diner’s consciousness process can enhance aesthetic satisfaction, which may in turn elevate the chef’s cooking progress. Like Gadamer has said, Art is a game where both parties valuate each other. The Chef, in spite of being a good cook with fresh ingredients, has a crucial component that will result in the intuitive aesthetic satisfaction of the audience. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
