Abstract
Students with low achievement in Mathematics tend to demonstrate poor motivation towards learning. This case study analyses the effects of an active learning approach to mathematics teaching and learning, in terms of learning performance and student self-reported attitudes and values. The sample population was from a special Macau school; a group of low-achievement and motivated students who also had poor team-work skills. The linkages between the school curriculum and teaching style were also considered. The research methodology used participant observation, interviews, and a student survey; all of which were contrasted with students’ academic marks. The findings showed the students were motivated during the active learning lessons and improved in their academic performance. The researcher examined the process of conducting Active Learning lessons, so that other teachers could also implement this method. Recommendations are offered to teachers and school’s administrative staff who may want to apply Active learning in their schools.
