Abstract
Globally, the rise of electric vehicles is gradually changing the traditional concept of transportation. Used electric vehicles, important in this change, are facing unique challenges and opportunities. It is especially important to explore the factors that influence residents' intention to purchase used EVs for sustainable transportation and to contribute toward environmental protection in Macau, a rapidly developing city.
This study points out the reliability, performance, and trust analysis that show the intricacy in the used electric vehicle market. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that reliability is a key factor in consumer decision-making, the findings suggest that, in Macau, consumers' positive attitudes toward battery performance more significantly influence their purchase intentions. This finding not only challenges conventional thinking about reliability but also provides new directions for future marketing strategies. We also notice the significant role of performance and trust factors regarding performance in consumer acceptance of used EVs, reflecting the assessment of consumers about the efficacy and longevity of the battery.
However, this research has not comprehensively explored the influence of environmental awareness and social norms in consumer decision-making, which therefore calls for the research to be deepened. Particular, as Macau's unique economic and cultural background is so different from any other cities within the GBA, it may create some influence on promoting the used EVs. Consequently, in the long term, research on how to promote public awareness and confidence in electric vehicles may be key for pushing the development of the used electric vehicle market. In addition, given the rapid development of technology and the uncertain prospects for change in the policy environment, a wider sample of data is needed in future research to reach more representative conclusions, especially when exploring the dynamics of consumer attitudes over time.
This paper is an exploratory novelty to reveal the multidimensionality of electric used vehicles in customers' perception and thus serves as a theoretical basis and guideline in the development of transportation towards sustainable development in Macau. In further research, the focus will be on social norms, technological advancement, and policy implications to form a more comprehensive ecosystem of the EV market and facilitate the development of Macau as a smart city.
